Doctors and Staff
Veterinary Dental Services was established in 1999 by Dr. Laura LeVan. In 2009 she sold the practice, and went on to establish the Veterinary Dental Education Center, with the goal of teaching veterinarians and technicians basic dentistry and oral surgery.
Dr. Bonnie H. Shope is a Diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 1997, and from Brown University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1991. As a veterinary student, Dr. Shope developed an interest in veterinary dentistry. She practiced small animal medicine after graduation, and then joined Veterinary Dental Services in 2000. From 2002 – 2007 she also worked as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University.
Dr. Paul Mitchell is a Diplomate and President of the American Veterinary Dental College. He graduated from Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1991 as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Mitchell worked for five years in equine and small animal practices and developed an interest in veterinary dentistry. He completed a dental residency at the Dallas Dental Service Animal Clinic with Dr. Robert Wiggs, and has served on the American Veterinary Dental College Exam Committee and Board of Directors. He worked for Veterinary Centers of America from 1999 to 2006 as a dental specialist and as their National Dental Educator. Dr. Mitchell received the "Peter Emily Service Award" in 2012 from the American Veterinary Dental College. Dr. Mitchell joined Veterinary Dental Services in 2009.
Dr. Diane Carle graduated from Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine and Swarthmore College, and worked in mixed practice before joining Veterinary Dental Services, LLC in 2010. She has completed her residency and is preparing to take her specialty boards. She lives with her two cats, Kitten and Quinn, a rescue kitty who had surgery and two root canals at VDS to treat an unhealed jaw fracture. Quinn is fully recovered from his surgery.
Amanda Shaner is our Head Client Care Specialist and joined our team in 2015. She is a true people person and our clients love her outgoing personality. Amanda brings 10 years of experience in the animal care industry and was an animal control officer and head kennel technician in her home state, New York. Amanda lives in Ashburnham with her fiancé, Josh and two Labrador retrievers, Remi and Rueger. When she is not helping clients at the front desk, she can be found enjoying outdoor activities such as, kayaking, hiking and playing with her dogs.
Genel Lesis our Office Manager and joined the VDS team in 2006. She has fulfilled many roles at the practice such as Client Care Specialist and Veterinary Technician but now focuses most of her as a manager. She started working in the veterinary field in 1998 while obtaining her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Worcester State University. Upon graduation she quickly realized her passion was with animals and their owners and she decided to stay in the field. She is currently working toward her Master's degree in Business Administration from Fitchburg State University. Genel lives in North Central Massachusetts with her husband, three cats and two connhounds.
Kerri Hoey, CVT is our Head Technician and one of our longest employees. She earned her Bachelors of Science in Wildlife Management with a minor in Marine Biology from the University of New Hampshire in 1997. Three years later she achieved certification as a veterinary technician while working at the Animal Rescue League of Boston. It was during these years that Kerri developed a strong interest in veterinary dentistry. We were elated to have Kerri join our team in 2007. Shortly after starting at VDS, she joined the American Society of Veterinary Dental Technicians. Currently, Kerri does not have any pets but she enjoys spending time with her brother's dog Rudy and her sister's dog Penelope. We know it is only a matter of time before another four legged creature steals her heart. Kerri is a lifelong resident of the North Shore and enjoys traveling, photography, kayaking and art.
Mandee Genereux, CVT first came to VDS as a veterinary technician intern from Mount Ida's veterinary technology program in 2013. She stayed on as an intern for two rotations and we liked her so much we decided to ask her to join our team. In addition to her Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Technology she also has a Bachelor of Art in English from the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. Prior to her veterinary career, Mandee worked as an administrative assistant for a large assisted living community and also as an HR assistant for a construction company. Mandee lives in Hudson with her 4 cats, 3 snakes, 6 chickens and a guinea pig. In her spare time Mandee enjoys creative writing, martial arts and home improvement projects.
Sarah Berkowitz, CVT joined the VDS team in 2014 after graduating from Mount Ida College with a Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Technology. Sarah developed an interest in veterinary medicine while working for a general practice in 2008. While Sarah is not a Massachusetts native, she has adjusted to the cold and snowy winter months. She lives in Marlborough with her boyfriend Ryan and 4 pets; Lucky the Timneh Grey Parrot, guinea pigs Mobert and Boota and Millicent, the edentulous domestic medium hair cat. When she is not busy taking care of our patients at work, Sarah can be found reading, knitting and crocheting.
Michelle Diggins, CVT came to VDS as an intern from Mount Ida College in 2015. She enjoyed her first rotation with us so much that she stayed for a second rotation. After her second rotation she was a part of our family and we couldn't let her go, so we hired her. Michelle earned her Bachelors of Art in Business Management and a minor in English from Assumption College in 2007. After graduation she worked in the human medical field as a senior support advisor for healthcare information systems. While working in the human healthcare industry, Michelle volunteered her spare time at the Shalit-Glazer Clinic MSPCA in Boston. She knew her future was with animals and thus returned to school at Mount Ida College. While studying Animal Science at Mount Ida, she participated in the Study Abroad program where she volunteered at spay and neuter clinics and provided medical treatment to cows and bulls in Belize. Michelle lives in Bolton with her orange domestic shorthair cat, Fenway. In her spare time she enjoys family game night, camping, kayaking and anything else to keep her active.
Tommy Blanchette, CVT joined our team in 2015 but is not new to veterinary medicine. Tommy's veterinary career started in 2008 at a veterinary practice in New Mexico where he developed an interest in veterinary dentistry. While in New Mexico he earned his Bachelor's in Animal Science from New Mexico State University and then an Associate degree in Applied Science in Veterinary Technology in 2011 from San Juan College. Tommy eventually found his way to back to Massachusetts where he worked at Angell Animal Medical Center in the Oncology Department. He then returned to general practice where his love of dentistry grew. Most recently Tommy worked as an anesthesia technician at Tuft's University Foster Hospital for Small Animals until a position was available at VDS. We have enjoyed having him as a part of the team and look forward to working with him in the coming years. Tommy lives in Worcester County with his rescue dog Luna and his boyfriend Billy. In his spare time Tommy enjoys cooking, spending time with his family and friends and watching Wheel of Fortune.
Tricia Rudisill joined our team as a veterinary technician in 2012 and has been involved in veterinary medicine for over 20 years. She grew up in Medfield but now lives in Acton with her daughter who is crazy about horses. Tricia has four cats-Harley, Baby Kitty, Red and Justine- as well as two dogs –Dude and Mabel. During her spare time, she likes to walk her dogs around the arboreteum and various conservation areas in Acton, is a frequent visitor to Kimball Farm, and would like to travel around the country in the future. Like her daughter, Tricia is fond of horses and also enjoys gardening, watching movies or reading a good book.
Jessica Macfarlane has been working in the veterinary industry for over 10 years. She took a short break from the profession to finish her Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science but ultimately missed working with the animals. Jessica applied as a technician after her own dog, Biscuit, was treated by Dr. Shope. She lives in Maynard with her daughter Jillian, a Rhodesian Ridgeback named Biscuit and a Vizlsa named Jujubee. Some of her favorite hobbies are photography, painting, hiking and obstacle racing.
